About the Digital Archive: Amplifying the Richness, Complexity and Diversity of the Borderlands
UA Confluencenter and Libraries Special Collections are collaborating with dozens of U.S.-Mexico borderlands artists, advocates, journalists, and cultural practitioners (including this event’s panelists) to build and activate a digital archive of projects aimed at reclaiming the border narrative, advancing migrant justice and addressing gaps in the historical record. The projects that will be represented in this archive illuminate dignity, joy, resilience, resistance, beauty, sorrow, humor, love and everything in between. In the process, they expose and transcend colonialist narratives and externally imposed perspectives of the border. Preserving and providing access to this wide range of portrayals will symbolically and materially legitimize the diversity and multidimensionality of border narratives. It will serve as a mirror facilitating greater self-knowledge and sense of wholeness for borderlands and immigrant communities and offer fertile inspiration for future research, art, storytelling, activism and policy advocacy for migrant and border justice.
Reclaiming the Border Narrative: Storytelling and Cultural Power for Migrant Justice is an effort to reframe and reshape national attention on migration and the United States-Mexico border by supporting authentic storytelling by affected communities on the cultures and socio-political dynamics that comprise the region. This initiative was funded by Ford Foundation in collaboration with Borealis Philanthropy, the Center for Cultural Power, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures.
El archivo digital: amplificando la riqueza y diversidad de la frontera
El Confluencenter y el Departamento de Colecciones Especiales de la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Arizona están colaborando con artistas, activistas, periodistas, y trabajadores culturales para activar un archivo digital. Los proyectos representados en el archivo se enfocan en rescatar las historias fronterizas, apoyar la justicia al migrante y abordar los vacíos en el registro histórico. Estos proyectos incluyen a una gran variedad de voces y temas. Exponen y cuestionan las perspectivas colonialistas e infundadas sobre la frontera. El facilitar y preservar el acceso a estos proyectos legitimará simbólica y materialmente la diversidad y multidimensionalidad de las narrativas fronterizas. El archivo digital servirá como reflejo integral de las comunidades fronterizas e inmigrantes. Será tambien una inspiración y un recurso para futuras investigaciones, proyectos artisticos y literarios, asi como para activistas y organizaciones de derechos humanos.
Recuperación de la Narrativa Fronteriza: Historias y Cultura por la Justicia al Migrante es un programa que trata de reconfigurar la atención nacional al tema de la migración y la frontera México-Estados Unidos. Promueve una narrativa auténtica sobre las dinámicas culturales y sociopolíticas regionales, presentada por miembros de las comunidades afectadas. Esta iniciativa fue subvencionada por Ford Foundation en colaboración con Borealis Philanthropy, Center for Cultural Power, National Association for Hispanic Journalists y National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures.
