Celebrating Excellence: Yazmin Vasquez Receives Individual Award for Excellence
What started out as a student worker position turned into a long-term career journey. That journey was recognized on April 2nd, when Yazmin Vasquez was greeted by the University of Arizona Staff Council with the unexpected news that she was selected for the Individual Award of Excellence.
Her recognition is part of the university’s Individual Awards, presented to approximately nine members of the Classified and University Staff each cycle. The award honors outstanding achievement, placing Vasquez among a small group of exceptional staff.
Vasquez’s journey with the Confluencenter began in 2018 as a student worker. In 2019, she transitioned into a full-time role, marking the start of what is now eight years of dedicated service. Over the years, she has become an integral part of the center’s daily operations, supporting programs, events, and initiatives that connect the University of Arizona with broader communities.
Through her consistency, attention to detail, and commitment to the Confluencenter’s mission, Vasquez has helped ensure the success of countless projects and public-facing programs. Her work behind the scenes plays a vital role in advancing creative inquiry and fostering meaningful engagement across disciplines.
“Yazmin is a pillar of the Confluencenter, with an ability to step forward during complex projects and guide teams through administrative processes,” said Dr. Javier Duran, Director of the Confluencenter and nominator. “Through professionalism, creativity, and care for her colleagues, Yazmin strengthens the effectiveness of her team and the programs they serve.”
A few weeks later, Vasquez was officially recognized at the Staff Award Ceremony with her team members, family, and friends. The Confluencenter was also recognized as a nominee for the Team Excellence Award, nominated by longtime colleague and partner David Taylor.
Reflecting on the recognition, Vasquez shared, “I’m so grateful to my team and colleagues for nominating me. It truly means so much to feel seen and appreciated.”
This award not only highlights Vasquez’s individual contributions but also underscores the importance of staff whose dedication strengthens the foundation of the university’s work every day. The Confluencenter community is proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor.
