Interested in joining CHCI’s new project funding? Learn about ‘Climate Futures’ this Friday, April 3.

CHCI is pleased to announce the call for proposals for its next cycle of collaborative research Initiatives, themed "Climate Futures." Scholars in the humanities and practitioners in the arts have become indispensable voices in understanding climate change — not only as a scientific or policy challenge, but as a profound historical, cultural, and ethical transformation. In a time of multiple and intersecting crises, climate change and environmental degradation can easily become obscured behind what appear to be larger or more immediately pressing concerns — democracy, migration, technology, civil and racial justice. Yet climate and the environment are often the threads that bind these issues together, and what this moment calls for is sustained research and teaching: a long-term commitment to environmental humanities scholarship that endures even as the shape of the crisis shifts, and that does not yield to the pressure to pursue the next urgent topic. We welcome proposals that engage climate change from the perspectives of the humanities and arts broadly defined — whether organized around research, teaching and learning, or community engagement.

[Updated] The deadline for submissions for funding is June 21, 2026. Read the full call.

Interested in joining? We will be hosting an online information 45 minute session on April 3, 2026 for scholars curious about the Initiative model and the Climate Futures theme (9am-9:45am PDT). This is an opportunity to learn about the application process, ask questions, and connect with potential collaborators across the CHCI network. Register here.
